Italy’s vehicle-bound national series no longer encodes a province. The familiar 1999 plate adds an EU band at left and an optional registration year and province label at right; both the long rear and separate compact front carry the same serial.

THE SYSTEM

How the numbering works

The national format runs AA 000 AA: the three digits advance first, then the letters progress from right to left.

Twenty-two letters are used; I, O, Q and U are excluded for legibility.

CC and CD combinations are managed to avoid confusion with diplomatic and consular series, while the entire EE block was skipped in 2011.

The ordinary sequence reached HA in May 2025. The plate stays with the vehicle until withdrawal, rather than following its keeper.

Z-first combinations form the two-line rear pool; X-first marks have served trailers since 2013, and Y-first allocations identify local-police vehicles.

BEYOND THE STANDARD

Special & distinctive series

Colour and suffixes can completely change a plate's meaning.

Long rear

The 520 × 110 mm rear uses the national serial between two blue fields.

Front plate

The same mark is compressed into the narrower 360 × 110 mm front format.

Square rear

The 360 × 220 mm alternative stacks a dedicated Z-first registration.

Motorcycle

A 177 × 177 mm plate uses two letters above five digits; conflicting province pairs are skipped.

Moped

The 120 × 140 mm six-character plate replaced the owner-bound trapezoidal type in 2006.

Trailer since 2013

Heavy trailers receive their own ordinary white X-first registration.

Local police

Y-first registrations and blue POLIZIA LOCALE wording identify municipal forces.

Diplomatic since 2024

The security redesign uses a blue status code and five blue digits, without mission letters.

How Italy's plates evolved

6 reconstructed milestones show how colour, geography and numbering changed before the present system.

1901–1905

Province written in full

Owners made their own metal plate, carrying the province name and a local number.

1905–1927

Numeric province key

A red number identified Milano; the following progressive serial was black. A front plate was optional.

1927–1976

White on black

Two-letter province abbreviations introduced a long provincial era; Roma uniquely appeared in full.

1976–1985

Two-piece rear

The rear combined a small orange province block with a separate black serial panel.

1985–1994

Reflective provincial era

Metal, reflective white plates restored dark characters while retaining province-led numbering.

1994–1999

National, before the bands

The AA 000 AA vehicle-bound national series arrived five years before the European-style side fields.

Municipal beginnings

The first Italian registration rules cover cycles and early motor vehicles.

Province names

Owner-made plates show the province in full followed by a local number.

Seventy-six numeric keys

A red province number and black serial establish the first national allocation table.

Letter provinces

White-on-black plates introduce two-letter province abbreviations; Roma keeps its full name.

Square rear format

Rear plates become two-line, placing the province in the upper-left corner.

Dimensions standardised

The rear settles at 275 × 200 mm and the front at a very narrow 262 × 57 mm.

1963

Plastic plates

Plastic construction replaces metal until durability problems prompt a later return.

1976

Modular rear

An orange province component and a separate serial component form a flexible two-piece rear.

1985

Reflective white

Metal returns; black-on-white plates keep provincial registration but adopt modern proportions.

1994

National sequence

On 28 February, AA 000 AA removes geography from a plate now assigned to the vehicle.

1999

Twin blue bands

The left EU field and optional year/province field at right create today’s familiar design.

2013

X-series trailers

Trailers begin receiving an independent XA 000 AA registration instead of only RIMORCHIO conventions.

2024

Diplomatic security redesign

CD, CC and related status plates drop country letters and dots in favour of a status code plus five blue digits.

2025

HA block begins

The ordinary passenger-vehicle sequence enters HA in May.

BEYOND THE EVERYDAY

More plates worth knowing

Special status, vehicle class or use can change the colour, prefix, suffix or even the entire registration logic.

Diplomatic since 2024

A blue status code plus five blue digits replaces the former mission-letter scheme.

Carabinieri

A red CC identity and dedicated serial distinguish the national gendarmerie.

Polizia di Stato

The state police name appears in red before its own serial.

Local police

Since 2006 local police have blue wording and a dedicated Y-first national series.

Guardia di Finanza

The financial police use a red GdiF prefix and independent progressive numbering.

Italian Army

Most Army vehicles use the red EI prefix, two letters and three digits.

Italian Navy

Marina Militare registrations retain their MM identity and separate sequence.

Fire service

Vigili del Fuoco vehicles use red VF; Trento and Bolzano have autonomous variants.

Port Authority

Capitaneria di Porto plates carry a red CP prefix and GUARDIA COSTIERA wording.

Civil defence

National and regional Protezione Civile fleets use PC or DPC families.

Escursionisti Esteri temporary

Temporary customs/export plates combine the EE series with red month and year expiry fields.

Test / prova

Transferable test plates are usually 165 × 165 mm and valid for no more than one year.

Agricultural

Agricultural machines use black characters on yellow, normally in a compact two-line arrangement.

Road machinery

Operating machinery uses red characters on a yellow square plate.

SMOM service

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta’s service fleet uses a red named prefix.

One registration, several physical formats

The vehicle class and mounting recess determine the shape; they are not merely scaled copies of one generic plate.

A compact horizontal plate carrying the same registration as the rear.

The usual long rear format with two side bands since 1999.

A two-line Z-first pool for compatible rear recesses.

The visible province is a display choice. Legal identity comes from the centrally allocated registration and controlled plate manufacture.
