Sweden

Sverige

Sweden uses a national vehicle-bound registration. When the original three-letter, three-digit pool neared exhaustion, the final digit could be replaced by a letter.

THE SYSTEM

How the numbering works

01

The classic national format is three letters followed by three digits.

02

Since 2019, the final digit may instead be a letter, creating the ABC 12A layout.

03

I, Q, V, Å, Ä and Ö are excluded from the first three positions; O is also excluded from the new final position.

04

Unsuitable three-letter groups are withheld, while ordinary registrations otherwise have no geographic meaning.

05

The number stays with the vehicle, though withdrawn marks can be reused after quarantine.

BEYOND THE STANDARD

Special & distinctive series

Colour and suffixes can completely change a plate's meaning.

ABC 12D

Standard private

A compact national serial with no geographic code.

ABC 12D

Short standard

A 300 × 110 mm alternative is issued where the ordinary long plate will not fit.

SABC12D

Motorcycle

Motorcycles use a smaller two-line rear-only plate.

PLATE 1

Personal alias

A chosen alias of up to seven characters is displayed while the ordinary registration remains assigned.

TAX 248

Taxi

Licensed taxis use black characters on a yellow background.

BM 248 C

Diplomatic

Diplomatic plates use a blue background; the first pair identifies the mission and the final letter the holder’s status.

ABC 248

Temporary

Temporary plates use white characters on red and carry limited validity.

482193

Military

The Armed Forces retain a separate numeric registration system.

ARCHIVE FORMATS

How Sweden's plates evolved

6 reconstructed milestones show how colour, geography and numbering changed before the present system.

1906–1950s
A 4821

Owner-made county plates

A county letter and serial were displayed in non-uniform plates bought from different suppliers.

1950s–1973
AC 48219

Expanded county series

Second letters extended crowded counties while one- and two-letter geography remained visible.

1972–1973
ABC 123

National ABC 123 begins

A centrally issued vehicle-bound series replaces every county registration.

1973–2002
ABC 123

National plate with control sticker

A coloured annual tax and inspection sticker occupies the central gap between letters and digits.

2002–2013
SABC 123

Optional EU field

The European stars and S identifier become available beside the national serial.

2014–2019
SABC 123

EU field standard

New plates receive the EU field as standard while the original six-character pool nears exhaustion.

1906

County letters

Regional letter prefixes introduce a recognisable Swedish system.

1972

National register

The modern three-letter, three-digit series begins issuing.

1973

Control sticker and full migration

Vehicles move to the national series and a coloured annual sticker occupies the centre of the rear plate.

1984

Reflective plastic

Embossed plastic plates replace the earlier sheet-steel construction.

1994

Short format

A narrower 300 × 110 mm plate becomes available for vehicles with limited space.

2002

Optional EU band

The S identifier and European stars become available.

2010

Tax sticker abolished

The physical annual control sticker disappears.

2014

EU field standard

The blue S field becomes standard on newly manufactured ordinary plates.

2019

Letter in final position

ABC 12A expands the national pool; O is excluded from the new final letter.

2019

Spacing narrows

With the sticker gone, the gap between letters and the final group becomes smaller.

BEYOND THE EVERYDAY

More plates worth knowing

Special status, vehicle class or use can change the colour, prefix, suffix or even the entire registration logic.

Personal alias
PLATE 1

Up to seven characters act as an alias; the ordinary registration remains assigned.

Dealer
M 4821

Green transferable plates identify licensed motor-trade use.

Diplomatic
BM 248 C

A blue plate combines a two-letter mission code, three digits and a final holder-status letter.

Taxi
TAX 248

Yellow plates distinguish licensed taxis.

Temporary
ABC 248

Red plates carry white characters and validity information.

Military
482193

Military plates use a separate all-numeric series, traditionally black on yellow.

Motorcycle
SABC12D

A compact two-line rear-only plate carries the same national registration.

Provisional
ABC 248

Temporary import and similar cases use a red field with a stated validity period.

Tractor / off-road
ABC 248

Some tractors and off-road machinery display a single plate at the front rather than the ordinary pair.

NATIONAL SERIAL

Geography disappeared in 1972

The registration follows the vehicle and remains through ownership changes, decommissioning and return to service.

Original grammarABC 123

Three letters and three digits formed the national pool introduced in 1972.

Expanded grammarABC 12A

Since 2019 the final digit may instead be a letter.

First block exclusionsI Q V Å Ä Ö

These letters are not used in the first three positions.

Final-position exclusionO

O is not used as the new final letter because it resembles zero.

GeographyNone

Modern letters are random rather than län codes.

Re-useAfter quarantine

Withdrawn registrations may eventually be assigned to another vehicle.

PHYSICAL FORMATS

The same mark is manufactured for different mounting spaces

Cars usually carry two plates; motorcycles, trailers and some machinery use only one.

Long standard520 × 110 mm

The usual front and rear format with an integrated S field.

Short standard300 × 110 mm

Available since 1994 when the vehicle lacks space for the long format.

MotorcycleTwo-line rear

A smaller single rear plate is used for motorcycles.

TrailerRear only

A trailer displays its own vehicle-bound registration at the rear.

Tractor / machineryFront only

Certain off-road classes display their single plate at the front.

EU fieldStandard since 2014

The European stars and S identifier are integrated into ordinary new plates.

SPECIAL COLOURS

Ordinary public fleets do not get special plates

Police, fire and public buses normally look like private registrations; colour is reserved for defined categories.

TaxiBlack on yellow

Licensed taxis use the same serial logic on a yellow field.

DiplomaticBlack on blue

The first letters encode the mission and a central letter indicates status.

TemporaryWhite on red

Validity dates accompany temporary registrations.

DealerGreen marker

Transferable dealer plates serve authorised motor-trade use.

MilitarySeparate numeric

Military registrations are all-numeric and sit outside the civil pool.

Historic vehiclesOrdinary plate

Sweden grants veteran tax and inspection treatment without creating a period-style plate.

THE OLD LÄNSBOKSTAV SYSTEM

Historic county letters

Modern Swedish marks carry no geography. These are the county prefixes found on registrations issued before the national system.

GOOD TO KNOW

Three road-side clues

The registration normally stays with the vehicle.

A custom ‘personal plate’ is an additional identity; the original number remains assigned.

The 2019 format expansion created millions of new combinations.
