Sweden uses a national vehicle-bound registration. When the original three-letter, three-digit pool neared exhaustion, the final digit could be replaced by a letter.

THE SYSTEM

How the numbering works

The classic national format is three letters followed by three digits.

Since 2019, the final digit may instead be a letter, creating the ABC 12A layout.

I, Q, V, Å, Ä and Ö are excluded from the first three positions; O is also excluded from the new final position.

Unsuitable three-letter groups are withheld, while ordinary registrations otherwise have no geographic meaning.

The number stays with the vehicle, though withdrawn marks can be reused after quarantine.

BEYOND THE STANDARD

Special & distinctive series

Colour and suffixes can completely change a plate's meaning.

Standard private

A compact national serial with no geographic code.

Short standard

A 300 × 110 mm alternative is issued where the ordinary long plate will not fit.

Motorcycle

Motorcycles use a smaller two-line rear-only plate.

Personal alias

A chosen alias of up to seven characters is displayed while the ordinary registration remains assigned.

Taxi

Licensed taxis use black characters on a yellow background.

Diplomatic

Diplomatic plates use a blue background; the first pair identifies the mission and the final letter the holder’s status.

Temporary

Temporary plates use white characters on red and carry limited validity.

Military

The Armed Forces retain a separate numeric registration system.

1906–1950s

Owner-made county plates

A county letter and serial were displayed in non-uniform plates bought from different suppliers.

1950s–1973

Expanded county series

Second letters extended crowded counties while one- and two-letter geography remained visible.

1972–1973

National ABC 123 begins

A centrally issued vehicle-bound series replaces every county registration.

1973–2002

National plate with control sticker

A coloured annual tax and inspection sticker occupies the central gap between letters and digits.

2002–2013

Optional EU field

The European stars and S identifier become available beside the national serial.

2014–2019

EU field standard

New plates receive the EU field as standard while the original six-character pool nears exhaustion.

Regional letter prefixes introduce a recognisable Swedish system.

Optional EU band

The S identifier and European stars become available.

2010

Tax sticker abolished

The physical annual control sticker disappears.

2014

EU field standard

The blue S field becomes standard on newly manufactured ordinary plates.

Letter in final position

ABC 12A expands the national pool; O is excluded from the new final letter.

Spacing narrows

With the sticker gone, the gap between letters and the final group becomes smaller.

BEYOND THE EVERYDAY

More plates worth knowing

Special status, vehicle class or use can change the colour, prefix, suffix or even the entire registration logic.

Personal alias

Up to seven characters act as an alias; the ordinary registration remains assigned.

Dealer

Green transferable plates identify licensed motor-trade use.

Diplomatic

A blue plate combines a two-letter mission code, three digits and a final holder-status letter.

Taxi

Yellow plates distinguish licensed taxis.

Temporary

Red plates carry white characters and validity information.

Military

Military plates use a separate all-numeric series, traditionally black on yellow.

Motorcycle

A compact two-line rear-only plate carries the same national registration.

Provisional

Temporary import and similar cases use a red field with a stated validity period.

Tractor / off-road

Some tractors and off-road machinery display a single plate at the front rather than the ordinary pair.

NATIONAL SERIAL

Geography disappeared in 1972

The registration follows the vehicle and remains through ownership changes, decommissioning and return to service.

SPECIAL COLOURS

Ordinary public fleets do not get special plates

Police, fire and public buses normally look like private registrations; colour is reserved for defined categories.
